The 7-day mindfulness course is administered via a smartphone app called “Calm”.
The app is free to install and use.
It is not necessary to pay for the subscription.

Seven days (or less)
The app asks you to complete a session every day for seven days.
This study is interested in whether or not you choose to do this.
This means that your participation is just as worthwhile and your data is just as valuable whether you complete all seven days, you only complete one or two days, or if you choose not to use the app at all.
So, if it takes you longer than 7 days to complete the course, or even if you "give up", it is important that you still send over your data and answer the follow up questions, so that your experience contributes to the research.

This will tell me how often you chose to meditate.
Then I'll ask you to answer some follow-up questions.

Installing the app
- Use your smartphone to access this webpage: www.calm.com
- Press the blue “Use Calm App” button.
- Or, press the “Get” button in the top right corner of the screen
- Or, scroll down and press “Download on the App Store” if you have an Apple device, or press “Get it on Google Play” if you have an Android device.
- Go through the same process you normally do when installing an app.
Setting up the app
- Open the app.
- Choose “learn to meditate”.
- Press continue.
- Create an account, using your Facebook details or an email address. (You can use a made-up email address if you want to).
- The “Unlock Calm” screen is an advertisement for the paid version. Do not press "Try 7 days for free", as this will sign you up for the subscription trial. Just ignore this screen by pressing the white back arrow button or white cross in the top corner of the screen.
- If you don't like the background noise, press the little mountain in the top right corner of the screen and change the sound settings.

Preparing to meditate
- Choose a moment in your day where you are relaxed and have time (e.g. during your morning or night-time routine).
- You need to hear the audio recording, so use headphones, or turn up the volume on your phone's speaker.
- Turn off the notifications on your phone, so that you won’t be disturbed.
- Choose a quiet space where you won’t be distracted by other people (e.g. your bedroom).
- Sit in a comfortable position where your back can be kept straight (e.g. on a chair, the side of your bed, or cross legged on the floor).
Starting a session
- The app has lots of different options for practising mindfulness. However, during the study, please only use the “7 Days of Calm” introductory course.
- Open the app and press the white meditate button (+).
- Choose the “7 Days of Calm” option.
- (If you don’t see the “7 Days of Calm”, choose “All” or “Beginners” from the menu at the top of the screen).
- Click the blue play button to start the session.
